Russia fines Twitter $40,500 for failing to remove banned content

A Moscow court today fined the social network Twitter 3 million rubles (about $40,500 or 39,000 euros) for failing to remove content prohibited by Russian law, such as an image of a swastika and instructions for making Molotov cocktails.

The court found Twitter guilty of violating the Administrative Code and imposed the fine after receiving a report from Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor, the official TASS agency said.

The content to be removed by Twitter is an image of a swastika with a slogan equating Russians with fascists, as well as a link to instructions for making a combustible mixture in bottles.

Twitter spokesman Oleg Volodin demanded that the case be annulled, saying that Roskomnadzor blocked the social network and therefore its contents are not available in Russia, according to TASS.
