Poland is in the red again. The Union will draw another 200 million zlotys at any moment. The stubbornness of government costs over a billion

The European Union intends to call on Poland to pay another EUR 42 million in fines. The equivalent of nearly PLN 200 million is the amount due for penalties charged by the Court of Justice of the European Union for failure to comply with the decision in the case of the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court. It covers the period from January 11 to February 21 – RMF informs.

According to the station’s correspondent, the EU sent a call for payment of the fine to the Polish authorities on February 21. However, the amount due was not settled after 45 days. So far, Brussels has already withdrawn EUR 69 million from the PLN 160 million in fines charged in the Supreme Court case. So there will be approx. EUR 50 million to be downloaded. For the case of the Disciplinary Chamber itself, Poland will suffer a loss of over PLN 770 million.

Penalties for the Supreme Court and Turów. The penalties have exceeded one billion zlotys

In October last year, the Court of Justice of the European Union imposed a fine on Poland in the amount of one million euros a day “for failure to suspend the application of national provisions concerning, in particular, the powers of the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court.”

Poland’s loss, however, is much greater, because the CJEU imposed a penalty on our country for the case of being kicked in Turów. In this case, it was half a million euros a day. Contrary to the ID issue, further amounts are no longer charged, because Poland has concluded an agreement with the government in the Czech Republic regarding the mine. In this case, the numerator stopped at EUR 68 million, which amounts to PLN 315 million. Summing up both penalties, Poland will lose at least PLN 1.1 billion on the government’s strategy.

Poland does not pay, the EU will deduct funds

Tuesday’s EC decision to deduct money for unpaid fines is not the first. On Friday, the Commission netted Poland EUR 69 million imposed by the CJEU for failing to implement the decision related to the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court.

What’s next? Sebastian Kaleta, Deputy Minister of Justice, MP of Solidarna Polska, stated in the morning conversation with RMF FM that it is planned to appeal against the decision to deduct the Commission to the Court of Justice of the European Union. The politician also reminded that the Polish Constitutional Tribunal deals with a similar issue. – If the Constitutional Tribunal issues a ruling that such penalties violate the Polish constitution in such a way that they force Poland to do something that it did not commit itself to when entering the EU, then the government will have a basis to refuse to pay these penalties, full, unquestionable – said the guest of the station.
