Pope Francis asks to pray for the success of COP26

He also asked to pray that “this meeting can give effective responses, thus giving hope to future generations.”

Pope Francis asked on Sunday to pray for the success of COP26, a crucial meeting for the future of the planet, which he hopes can provide “effective answers” to future generations.

“The United Nations summit on climate change, COP26, kicks off today in Glasgow, Scotland. Let us pray so that the cries of the Earth and of the poor are heard ”, declared the pope after praying the Angelus.

He also asked to pray that “this meeting can give effective responses, thus giving hope to future generations.”

This appeal from the pope comes after the leaders present at the G20 summit in Rome agreed to limit global warming to +1.5 ° C above pre-industrial levels, according to sources close to the negotiations.

“It is time to act, and to act together” against climate change, the pandemic and poverty, urged Pope Francis in a text released this Sunday, before his statement, by the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera.

The text is part of the preface of a book that will be released in mid-November with the reflections and reports on the reception of the encyclical “Laudato si ‘” by Francisco dedicated to the defense of the environment.

It is also a message to the G20 leaders gathered in Rome on Sunday, the eve of the key conference on climate change in Glasgow (UK), which kicks off on Monday.

“There is an ecological crisis, represented by the ‘cry of the earth’, and a social crisis, represented by the ‘cry of the poor’, who have been made mortal by a health crisis: the covid-19 pandemic,” he warns Pope Francis.

“However, let us not forget that crises are also windows of opportunity: they are occasions to recognize and learn from the mistakes of the past,” he writes.

“It’s time to think big, to rethink our priorities … and to reprogram our future. It is time to act, to act together, it is time ”, concludes the leader of the 1.3 billion Catholics.

The book, which will be electronic, with the title “Laudato si ‘Reader. An Alliance of Care for Our Common House ”, published on the occasion of COP26, can be downloaded free of charge from 12 November from the web page of the Vatican’s“ Dicastery for Integral Human Development Service ”, promoter of the publication.
