The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterresasked this Wednesday Israel “avoid the excessive use of force”, as well as “stop all unilateral measures, such as settlements and evictions (of houses)”, in a new statement to urge peace in the Middle East.
The statement contains the generic appeals “to the parties”, the need to avoid incendiary rhetoric and the request not to fall into provocations, as well as a request to respect the sacred character of Jerusalem and its holy places, venerated by Jews, Muslims and Christians.

But on this occasion, Guterres included those specific requests to Israel, although he did not mention it by name, when referring to the excessive use of force, which resulted last weekend in that of the 156 wounded in the Esplanade of the Mosques , 153 were Palestinians and the other 3 were Israeli policemen.
The violence, which has been going on for a month with almost no respite –40 dead in all– in the West Bank, Israel, and since the weekend also in Jerusalem, seems to have eased in the last two days.
However, this violence moved yesterday to Gaza: for the first time in seven months, Israel attacked the strip after being hit by several rockets, explosions that caused no casualties. (I)
