Poland may receive 6.5 billion zlotys. For immediate help for refugees. Expert: Needed system solutions

Poland may receive money from the European Union to help refugees. The means, as reported by “”, would come from two sources.

The European Union will give Poland billions to help refugees from Ukraine?

The first is the transfer of funds originally intended for combating the effects of COVID-19 (approximately EUR 0.5 billion). The second source of financing is the pool of free funds from unused funds for the years 2014-2020.

As “DGP” explains, the funds will be useful to local authorities. “The money can be spent on refugee support centers in border provinces, financing infrastructure, housing and equipment as well as services in the field of employment and education, social integration, health care and childcare” – we read in the journal.

Border Guard: Nearly 2.5 million refugees in Poland

Additional measures seem necessary in view of the data released by the Border Guard on Monday. From the first day of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, 2.48 million refugees have entered Poland from that country. On Sunday, the officers dismissed 22,000,300 people. This is a decrease of more than 6 percent compared to Saturday. On Monday, until 07.00, 3,000 400 refugees entered Poland. At the same time, 457,000 people left Poland for Ukraine since the beginning of the war.

According to experts, not everyone will decide to take this step. – Experts estimate that more than half of the refugees from Ukraine – and therefore perhaps over a million people – will stay in Poland permanently, and the rest will return to Ukraine after the end of hostilities, explains the sociologist Dr. Karolina Podgórska from Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin.

NGOs expect systemic support

Helena Krajewska from the Polish Humanitarian Organization spoke about the challenges related to helping refugees from Ukraine in an interview with Gazeta.pl at the beginning of March. – In order to meet the requirements of such a large number of refugees, systemic solutions will be needed. Many local authorities are already transforming schools, sports centers, council housing, allocating hotels or hostels to meet the housing needs of refugees. But solutions for financial support, work permits, placing children in nurseries, kindergartens and schools will be needed – she explained.

According to Helena Krajewska, local organizations, activist groups and local governments play a huge role in helping. However, these have limited resources. That is why it is so important to support both the government and the European Union.
