The EU is proposing new sanctions against Russia. An embargo on coal imports, a blockade of the assets of other Russian oligarchs
In Brussels, the ambassadors of the member states started a discussion on the next package of sanctions against Russia for the attack on Ukraine. The European Commission sent yesterday proposals on this matter to EU capitals. The approval of the fifth package of restrictions requires the unanimous consent of 27 countries.
The proposed sanctions include an embargo on coal imports from Russia worth EUR 4 billion annually. On the list, however, there is no embargo on oil and gas supplies, the value of which is estimated at over EUR 80 billion per year. So far, Germany and Austria, supported by Hungary, cannot agree on this matter.
In addition, the commission proposes to block access to European ports for Russian ships, except for those with food or products from the energy sector. The sanctions are also expected to hit road carriers from Russia and Belarus. In addition, there are to be further import restrictions covering wood, cement, alcohol, seafood, rubber products and chemicals. The export ban is to cover advanced semiconductors and quantum computers. Russian companies will be prohibited from participating in tenders in member states.
More oligarchs and representatives of the authorities, as well as members of their families are to be entered on the black list with a ban on entering the European Union and blocked properties and bank accounts in Europe – in this context, two daughters of Vladimir Putin are mentioned.
