Poland has caught up. The government did not pay any fines, and Brussels cut the funds. Hitting important programs

The European Commission has cut some of the funds in Poland. This is the effect of evading the voluntary payment of penalties awarded by the Court of Justice of the European Union, he reports.

The deduction of funds was confirmed by the Ministry of Finance. Brussels has decided to cut appropriations related to two projects. EUR 15 million was deducted from the funds allocated to the implementation of the Knowledge, Education, Development (POWER) Operational Program. Funding from the Regional Operational Program of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship has been reduced by another EUR 15 million, informs the website.

EUR 68 million in fines for Turów

In September 2021, the Court of Justice of the European Union decided to impose a fine on Poland for maintaining production at the Turów mine. “Due to the fact that the extraction of lignite at the Turów mine has not stopped, Poland is obliged to pay the European Commission a periodic penalty payment of EUR 500,000 a day” – the decision wrote.

Poland did not comply with the decision to temporarily suspend production, nor did it voluntarily pay fines. Until the agreement with the Czech government is reached and signed, the amount of fines has reached the level of EUR 68 million.

One million euros for the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court

The CJEU imposed another penalty on Poland. In October, one million euros a day was imposed on our country “due to the failure to suspend the application of national provisions concerning, in particular, the powers of the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court”.

In January, the European Commission sent a letter of appeal to Poland in this regard. It amounted to EUR 70 million, which is PLN 320 million. In late March, Brussels said it would hit measures in April.

Government spokesman Piotr Müller announced that the dispute with the EU regarding the Disciplinary Chamber could be ended in March. Ultimately it did not happen. – The declaration on the liquidation of the Disciplinary Chamber is valid and we will implement it – assured the government spokesman.

Media: The government wants the penalties to be canceled

“Dziennik Gazeta Prawna” that the Polish government has made attempts to cancel the penalties imposed by the CJEU. It concerns both those concerning the mine in Turów and the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court.

An interlocutor from the prime minister’s entourage, quoted by “DGP”, argues that the Czechs have no interest in supporting the imposition of penalties on Poland. – They support us now, but they do not want to talk about it loudly, because Turów still causes them political quarrels, so they officially approach it with a distance – says the source of the journal.
