The EU bailiff has convicted Poland again. “The EC reduced the unpaid fines imposed for the Disciplinary Chamber”

The European Commission struck Poland penalties imposed by the CJEU for failure to comply with the decision related to the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court. According to Katarzyna Szymańska-Borginon, RMF correspondent, it concerns penalties imposed from November 3, 2021 to January 10, 2022, inclusive. “The authorities were informed about it on March 23” – he informs.

The amount deducted by Brussels is EUR 69 million, which is the equivalent of PLN 320 million. This is the second such deduction. On Tuesday, the media reported that the EC cut funding for two important programs in the amount of EUR 30 million. Therefore, a total of EUR 99 million was deducted, which gives about PLN 460 million.

One million euros a day for non-compliance with the Supreme Court ruling

In October last year, the Court of Justice of the European Union imposed a fine on Poland in the amount of one million euros a day “for failure to suspend the application of national provisions concerning, in particular, the powers of the Disciplinary Chamber of the Supreme Court.”

In January, the European Commission sent a letter of appeal to Poland in this regard. It amounted to nearly EUR 70 million, or about PLN 320 million. In late March, Brussels said it would hit measures in April.

Government spokesman Piotr Müller announced that the dispute with the EU regarding the Disciplinary Chamber could be ended in March. Ultimately it did not happen. – The declaration on the liquidation of the Disciplinary Chamber is valid and we will implement it – assured the government spokesman.

Half a million euro a day for Turów

The penalty related to the Supreme Court was not the first imposed on Poland by the EU tribunal. In September 2021, he decided to punish Poland for maintaining production at the Turów mine. “Due to the fact that the extraction of lignite at the Turów mine has not stopped, Poland is obliged to pay the European Commission a periodic penalty payment of EUR 500,000 a day” – the decision wrote.
