The war in Ukraine has reached the schools and institutes of Spain. Teachers from various educational centers try to show the youngest what is happening in Eastern Europe, and they do so by promoting interest in a perspective beyond national borders.
To see how they manage to focus on this type of news, laSexta has attended a class on ‘European Union’ at the Rey Pastor public school in Moratalaz in which the war in Ukraine is explained. The teacher of the subject, Paloma Juárez, has highlighted that minors are interested in the events that occur in Europe: “They are issues that are there and that once they are proposed they begin to become aware“.
This is how some of the young people have shown it before the cameras of laSexta: “It is very far from us, but in reality it can affect us a lot“, recognized David Rodríguez, a 4th year ESO student, while Laura Espinón assured that “nobody was prepared for this”.
The Ártica school, in Carabanchel, is another one that has incorporated this new syllabus. Total, 19 centers already teach the subject of ‘European Union’, and several centers have requested that it be included in the educational offer. There, some students have also highlighted the matter: “We are talking a lot about the war between Ukraine and Russia and how Europe is helping by giving them resources”, said Marina Avellano, a student in the last year of ESO.
This course is an initiative of the European Parliament office in Spain that would promote knowledge about the union of the Member States.
