The mayor of the Ukrainian city of Chernigov, in the north of the country, has shared on social networks the devastation of the place after more than a month of war in which Russian troops have killed dozens of civilians.
The Ukrainian deputy Oleksii Goncharenko has accompanied the mayor on a car trip in which both have wanted to show the ashes of a city that still burning after 29 days of invasion. “We are in a war zone. It is extremely dangerous to be here,” they warn as they roll as tires burn in the streets and smoke rises from recently bombed civilian buildings.
The situation is bleak: rubble is scattered through deserted streets where only the sound of flames is heard devouring structures.
Mayor Vladyslav Atroshenko has pointed out that the city cemetery cannot encompass all the dead that arrivewhich is why they keep people in morgues and refrigerators longer than normal.
Last week, a Russian missile killed ten people in the city who were waiting in one of the so-called ‘bread queues’ to get some food. “Under the procedural leadership of the Chernigov Regional Prosecutor’s Office, a pre-trial investigation was launched for violations of the laws and customs of warcombined with premeditated murder,” the Chernigov Prosecutor General’s Office explained on Telegram at the time.
