The Algerian Senate summons Spain to rectify the “regrettable and unusual” turn in foreign policy

For the upper chamber of the Algerian Parliament, the change constitutes “an unacceptable drift and taking part against a cause considered by the United Nations as that of the last colony in Africa recognizing the right of the Saharawi peoples to self-determination”

The Council of the Nation, the Algerian Senate, criticized this Sunday the statement by the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, in which he supported the Moroccan proposal for autonomy as a solution to the dispute over Western Sahara and has summoned the Spanish Congress to rectify this “regrettable and unusual” turn in foreign policy.

“The Bureau of the Council of the Nation, chaired by Salah Goudjil, wishes to express its astonishment at the surprising deviation registered in Spain’s position towards sahrawi just cause and the dubious support it has shown for a colonization process against the legality of international relations,” the Senate said in a press release.

“The drift of the position of the Spanish government and its alignment with the theses of the Majzen (administrative apparatus of the Kingdom of Morocco), is out of tune with the reality on the ground, as well as with the customs and notions of law international community that rejects all forms of colonialism and domination,” the Senate said.

Also the Party of National Liberation Front (FLN), which has governed Algeria since independence from France in 1962, has criticized the Spanish Government and has urged it to check your new “strange” positionconsidering Madrid’s new position “a historical betrayal” of the Saharawi people.

“Spain had previously observed a neutral position and had supported the resolution of this conflict within the framework of international legality and the principles of the United Nations, but now this country contradicts itself,” the party has stated, for which it has summoned Madrid to “correct” this drift.

In addition, the FLN has “fully” supported the decision of the Algerian Government to withdraw its ambassador from Madrid after this “betrayal” of the Spanish Government to the Saharawi people.
