The Moroccan ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, returned to Spain this Sunday almost a year after her government called her for consultations, the ambassador herself confirmed to EFE. “It is a pleasure to return to work in Madrid and strengthen relations between Spain and Morocco, as our respective countries have determined,” said Benyaich shortly after landing in the Spanish capital.
The return of the Moroccan ambassador occurs two days after Spain announced that it supports the Moroccan proposal for autonomy for the Sahara, considering it as the “most serious, realistic and credible” basis for resolving the conflict, for which Algeria decided to call its ambassador in Madrid for consultations “with immediate effect”.
Benyaich was “happy and satisfied” with her return to her post and stressed that “crises only occur among those of us who are family.” “A new stage is opening, a new page in relations between the two countries, and it will be an important stage,” stressed the Moroccan ambassador.
The Benyaich’s return to Spain closes the diplomatic crisis between Spain and Morocco triggered by Madrid’s decision to host the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Gali, in a hospital in Logroño last year to treat him for COVID-19. That decision worsened relations between the two countries, and had its most serious episode in the migratory wave of May 2021.when nearly 10,000 immigrants poured into Ceuta, many of them minors.
Asked about Spain’s support for the Moroccan proposal for autonomy for the Sahara, Benyaich stated that “Morocco appreciates at its fair value” this new position, which the United States also shares. “We are brother countries, and it is an honor to contribute to deepen our relations”, concluded the Moroccan ambassador.
