The profile sought by the mafias that are already operating on the borders of Ukraine is that of woman alone or accompanied by her children. In this sense, Ana Garralda, UNICEF spokesperson in Poland, points out that “the profiles are clear: vulnerable population“, among which are “unaccompanied children”.
Along the same lines, Vicente Raimundo, Director of International Cooperation at Save the Children warns that “they are looking for women, girls alone, extremely vulnerable and that can be easily subdued“.
Humanitarian organisations, displaced on the ground, have already detected their presence: “We have seen groups of men they seem to be waiting for women to offer them selfless helpbut in reality they understand the situation in Ukraine as an opportunity to open new markets and get hold of young merchandise,” says Vicente Raimundo.
It’s about nets that chase”sexually exploit or abuse them and use girls or boys to child labor or even organ trafficking“, regrets Ana Garralda.
According to humanitarian organizations, this problem already existed in Eastern Europe before the war, but has now intensified. “A lot of people are arriving who have trouble knowing the languageand that they have to cover their primary needswhich makes them especially vulnerable,” says Susana Oliver, director of programs at World Vision Spain.
The European Union, experts agree, has reacted to the war quickly. The Director of International Cooperation of Save the Children highlights in this regard that “barely 48 hours after the start of the war, all people leaving Ukraine were received with a legal status“. However, ask to strengthen the system: “Point out the records of families that are willing to welcome and increase the unification processes,” defends Vicente Raimundo.
“In some places it is already beginning to be identified with bracelets to those drivers who want to take the refugees“, points out, for her part, Ana Garralda, who affirms that this “cannot be done in any way”, but that “they have to surrender their licensehis identification so that the authorized ones can locate the driver and the refugee he is taking with him, and know what his destination will be.” Only in this way will those fleeing from the war be able to recover a certain normality.
