The UN indicates that humanitarian needs are increasingly urgent in eastern Ukraine

The UN warned on Friday that humanitarian needs in eastern Ukraine are becoming increasingly urgent, with more than 200,000 people without access to water in the Donetsk region alone.

“The humanitarian situation in cities such as Mariupol and Sumy is extremely dire, as residents face serious shortages of food, water and medicine, with potentially fatal consequences,” said a spokesman for the UN refugee agency. (UNHCR), Matthew Saltmarsh.

Speaking from the Polish border, he told reporters in Geneva that humanitarian needs in eastern Ukraine “are becoming even more urgent.”

“More than 200,000 people do not have access to water in several towns in the Donetsk region, while the incessant shelling in Lugansk has destroyed 80% of some towns, leaving 97,800 families without electricity,” said Saltmarsh.

In addition, it indicated that the selective attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure and the lack of safe passage endangered the lives of thousands of civilians.

Vulnerable people are finding it increasingly difficult to access essential services such as food, water, medicine and emergency medical care in affected areas.

UNHCR is closely following the United Nations negotiations with the belligerents to send humanitarian aid to some eastern cities, estimating that some 13 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance and protection in Ukraine. (I)
