The Congress of Colombia will be occupied by almost 30% by women

The new Congress of Colombia, resulting from the vote on March 13, will be busy in 28.8% by women, which represents an increase of 9.1% compared to the previous one, as compiled on Thursday by UN Women.

Of the total of the 295 seats that there are, adding those of the House of Representatives and the Senate, 85 will be occupied by women, 30 more than in the previous electoral period (2018-2022).

“This brings Colombia closer to the regional average of women’s participation in parliaments”said the representative in Colombia of UN Women, Bibiana Aído, since this country is finally above the global average of female participation (25.5%) and is close to that of the region, which is currently at 32%, since America has some of the most equal parliaments in the world.

However, “The road is not finished yet. We must continue to join efforts to move towards parity”, asserted the Spanish Aído.

in the Senate, 33 of the 108 seats will be occupied by women (30%) and in the House of Representatives women will sit in 52 of the 187 seats (27.8%). That is 10 more senators and 20 representatives than between 2018-2022.

The head of the Electoral Observation Mission (EOM) of the European Union (EU), Javi López, celebrated yesterday “enthusiastically” this step from 20 to almost 29% of women’s representation in Congress.

“The advance is similar in both chambers, and it also occurs in the indigenous and Afro-descendant constituencies. However, and despite the parity lists, only three candidates won their seat in the 16 Special Transitory Districts for Peace (Citrep)”, she said on Wednesday during the preliminary statement of the EU EOM.

In the Citrep, voting where 16 victims were elected who will have voice and vote in the House of Representatives in the peace seats, only three women were elected, by the special constituencies of Arauca, Córdoba and Antioquia. (I)
