European Union appreciates that Boric has not aligned himself with populism

The head of the South American division in the European External Action Service of the European Union (EU), Veronique Lorenzo, stated that something “interesting and attractive” of the new president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, is that, being a president of the left, “has not aligned itself with populism” and it is an interlocutor “credible” and that “does not polarize”.

Lorenzo appeared before the European Parliament delegation for relations with Chile to discuss the situation in the country and the bilateral relationship with the EU after the recent election of Boric as president, after what he called a “difficult period in recent years”. ” for intra-regional integration “because of polarization.

“What is interesting and attractive about President Boric is that he is a left-wing president but he has not aligned himself, as we have seen recently in other years with other left-wing presidents, with populism”, Lorenzo pointed out to the MEPs.

The community diplomacy representative noted that all of Boric’s statements so far “have been to establish a bridge, be pragmatic and not align with an ideology” and stated that “That’s what we need, a credible interlocutor who does not polarize.”

Lorenzo trusted that Chile will continue to be “more than ever a privileged interlocutor” for the European Union and considered that there is room for this country “to intervene in quite specific problems in a pragmatic way, such as the relationship with Venezuela.”

“We hope that it will be a really important partner, not only bilaterally but also in the regional context”, said Lorenzo, who also valued the Chilean potential to produce the “really green hydrogen that we need in Europe” and affirmed that the EU foresees, in this meaning, financial support and investment facilities for European companies.
