The attack on Mariupol theater (Ukraine) has left no fatalitiesbecause its anti-aircraft shelter “has resisted”, as announced by the Ukrainian parliamentarian Sergiy Taruta in social networks. The people inside, hundreds of civilians according to the Ukrainian authorities, “remain alive”.
“After a terrible night of uncertainty, on the morning of the 22nd day of war there is finally good news from Mariupol,” Taruta said on Facebook. “The bomb shelter held. The rubble is being removed and there are people alive“, he assured.
The parliamentarian has also explained that the heavy bombardments that are registered in the city have prevented the rescue services from going to clear the ruins of the theater.
Mariupol City Council ensures that some 1,000 people take shelter usually from the bombings in the theater, where the word “children” could be read painted on the floor.
The Ukrainian authorities accuse the Russian Army of the air attack. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharovfor his part, has defended that this accusation is a “lie”, and points to the Azov Battaliona neo-Nazi military unit integrated into the Ukrainian Army, with a presence in the coastal city since 2014, when the Donbas war began.
The city of Mariupol, in Donetsk Oblast, has besieged by the Russian Army for three weeks, which has brought it to the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe due to the lack of water, medicine and food.
