The 193-member United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday adopted a resolution supporting bicycles as a tool to combat climate change.
The resolution, proposed by Turkmenistan, was approved unanimously and like all in the General Assembly is non-binding.
It calls for “integrating the bicycle into public transport, in rural and urban settings, in developed and developing countries.”
Increasing the promotion of cycling and improving road safety will help achieve “sustainable development, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions,” according to the resolution.
More specifically, the resolution urges member states to “pay special attention to the use of bicycles in cross-cutting development strategies, including shared bicycle services”, as well as when possible “in national development programs and policies , regional and international”. (I)
