Chinese authorities have registered 3,507 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The country is plunged in the worst wave of infections since the start of the pandemic in Wuhan.
The National Health Commission has confirmed that among the new positives there are 3,507 cases of local transmission and 95 imported. Most of the new infections, 3,076, have been reported in the northeastern province of Jilin, followed by Shandong with 106 cases, Shaanxi in the northwest, Guangdong in the south, Fujian and Zhejiang in the east.
Given this situation, the authorities have decreed confinement in various areas and large cities, as is the case in Shenzhenwith 17 million inhabitants.
Last Sunday, the regional government announced the confinement of the southern city of Shenzhen, one of the country’s main technological hubs and headquarters of companies such as Huawei and Tencent. Its residents will have to undergo three nucleic acid tests in an attempt to slow the curve of cases.
The city authorities reported that the confinement will last until next Sunday, March 20, during which time only “essential tasks” such as those related to the supply of water and electricity will be allowed. Those who do not work in this type of sector must do so from home, and dThey must also close commercial stores with the exception of supermarketspharmacies and medical institutions.
Transportation in Hong Kong’s neighbor Shenzhen, which has also seen a dramatic rise in cases in the past month, will be kept “at a basic level” for the city to stay supplied. Residential buildings will remain in quarantine, and the inhabitants will only be able to leave without express permission, adds the text.
The latest wave of COVID-19 also affects the metropolis of Shanghai, whose authorities last weekend asked residents not to go out of the city if it is not strictly necessary.
