Woman who protested on Russian television against the war can be sentenced to 15 years in prison

A woman who burst into the news of a pro-Kremlin Russian television station with a banner against the war in Ukraine She could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison, her lawyer said Tuesday.

“I estimate that my client, Marina Ovsiannikova, is at risk of being subjected to criminal trial and non-administrative, under a new law that provides for up to 15 years in prison,” said Daniil Berman.

For now, the Russian authorities have not indicated what they are going to charge this woman with.

Ovsiannikova, in her 40s, a native of Odessa, Ukraine, is an employee of Pervy Kanal television, which is very close to Russian power. On Monday night she burst into the middle of the news and she stood behind the presenter with a banner that read: “No to war, do not believe the propaganda. Here they are lying to you”.

The Russian authorities approved a law in early March that punishes the publication of “slanderous information” about the Russian army.

Marina Ovsiannikova, a mother of two young children, could be included in this law, according to her lawyer.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov called this act “hooliganism” on Tuesday.

In a video recorded before breaking into the news, Ovsiannikova explained that her father is Ukrainian and her mother Russian and that she cannot stand the spread of “lies” that turn the Russians into “zombies”.

His Facebook account has since received tens of thousands of messages of support.

A spokesman for the head of European Union diplomacy, Josep Borrell praised the woman’s gesture on Tuesday.
