New EU sanctions against Russia. What about the suspension of imports of Russian energy resources?
The final decision on the sanctions is expected on Monday at noon, said Beata Płomecka, the Brussels correspondent of Polish Radio. Proposals also include a ban on the export of EU luxury goods to Russia, a ban on imports of iron and steel goods and a ban on new European investments in the Russian energy sector.
More Russian oligarchs, including the owner of the London football club Chelsea, which is already subject to British restrictions, are to be entered on the black list with a ban on entry and blocked estates – the Polish Radio correspondent learned.
However, there is still no consent to suspend the import of gas, oil and coal from Russia, despite the pressure of the countries in our region, including Poland. One of the EU diplomats told the Polish Radio correspondent that there was a lot of resistance from some countries, including Germany.

Roman Abramovich excluded from the position of Chelsea director
Recall that on March 10, Great Britain imposed sanctions on Roman Abramovich and other Russian oligarchs. The local government incl. froze his assets and banned entry to the Islands, which prevented him from selling the football club. Chelsea are now unable to sell players and tickets for future games, and has a limited travel budget, which could cause problems getting to the Champions League 1/8-final rematch against LOSC Lille on March 16.
Due to the sanctions, the Premier League decided on March 12 to exclude Roman Abramovich from the position of Chelsea director.
“Following sanctions by the UK government, the Premier League board has removed Roman Abramovich from his position as Chelsea Football Club director. The board’s decision does not affect the club’s ability to train and play matches under the terms of the government-issued license that expires on May 31, 2022.” – we read in the announcement.
