The Russian ambassador in VenezuelaSergey Mélik-Bagdasárov, assured this Sunday that the visit of a delegation from the Government of United States to Caracas, last weekend, represents a “recognition” to the president Nicholas Maduro and “his wrong policies” towards the Caribbean country.
“We consider this trip by the United States delegation as a sign (…) that they have recognized their mistaken policies towards Venezuela,” said the Russian official in an interview granted to the Venezuelan Minister of Culture, Ernesto Villegas and broadcast today by the state channel VTV.
For Mélik-Bagdasárov “this rapprochement that they (USA) are now proposing to buy oil or I don’t know what they are doing here, asking for freedom for the prisoners, is evidence that they have now learned that there is only one government here. ”.
The White House confirmed last Monday, March 7, the trip of a high-level US delegation to Caracas the previous weekend.
The objective was to hold meetings with the Maduro Executive on “energy security” and address the situation of the six former directors of Citgo (a subsidiary of the Venezuelan state oil company PDVSA) detained in Venezuela, one of whom has already been released, after the meeting between this delegation and the Venezuelan president.
In this sense, the Russian ambassador to Venezuela assured that it is necessary to treat Venezuela with respect and that the rapprochement of the US with the Caribbean country “is evidence of correcting its own mistakes.”
“They are acknowledging their mistakes and trying to correct them. It’s good, I hope that in time they will learn it with us too,” he said.
In addition, the Russian official thanked the support that the Venezuelan Executive has shown to Russia after the invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24.
“We appreciate it very much and we thank the Government and the people of Venezuela for the important support to my country,” he said.
