President Joe Biden dispatched his national security adviser for a meeting in Rome on Monday with a prominent Chinese official, amid allegations that China is spreading Russian disinformation about the invasion of Ukraine and could help Russia to evade economic sanctions.
The meeting between national security adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese foreign policy adviser Yang Jiechi will focus on “efforts to manage competition between our two countries and discuss the impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine on regional and global security.” said Emily Horne, speaking on behalf of the White House National Security Council.
The United States has accused China of spreading false claims by Russia that Ukraine has chemical and biological weapons laboratories thanks to US aid. Senior officials in Washington say China is trying to justify a possible Russian chemical or biological weapons attack on Ukraine.
Sullivan said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that when Russia starts accusing other countries of preparing to launch biological or chemical attacks, “it’s a good sign that they’re preparing to do that.”
He added that neither China nor other countries should be helping Russia to evade sanctions and that no country should be trying to rescue the Russian economy.
“We will make sure that neither China nor any other country can compensate Russia for these losses,” Sullivan said.
