Russian troops have killed the American journalist Brent Renaud during an attack in the Ukrainian city of Irpin, on the outskirts of Kiev, as confirmed by the head of the Kiev region Police, Andrii Nebitov. “The invaders kill even international media journalists who are trying to show the truth of the atrocities of Russian troops in Ukraine,” he said on Facebook.

Although at first it was believed that he worked for the New York Timesthe newspaper has clarified that Renaud “I was not working with any” of its departments in Ukraine. “Although had contributed to the Times in the past (most recently in 2015), I was not working with any of our Times departments in Ukraine,” he explains in a note.

The outlet stressed that the information that has circulated that the victim was an NYT journalist stems from the fact that he was carrying a “Times press ID that was issued to him for coverage many years ago“. The New York Times noted that it is “deeply saddened by the passing of Brent Renaud”, which it described as a “talented filmmaker” who had collaborated with the medium over the years.

Cliff Levy, one of those responsible for the New York newspaper, showed on Twitter his deep sadness “upon learning of the death of an American journalist in Ukraine, Brent Renaud”, who, he explains, was “a talented photographer and filmmaker“.
