Moldova fears a Russian invasion: 2.5 million inhabitants, 6,000 soldiers and thousands of Ukrainian refugees

moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe and, in turn, one of those that is showing increased solidarity with neighboring Ukraine. It has been one of the main recipients of Ukrainian refugees since the conflict broke out 17 days ago.

With scarcely 2.5 million inhabitants and only 6,000 soldiers in its Army, Moldova has its own Donbas: the Republic of Transnistria, an unrecognized territory that is officially part of Moldova but acts completely independently. It is a completely dependent territory of Russia, which even pays the territory’s pensions.

This pro-Russian territory and the current situation, aggravated by the reception of refugees, fuel fears that Moscow can intervene in the territory if he is able to take over Odessa. Something that, according to Spanish intelligence sources, could happen.

Meanwhile, the citizens welcome 70% of the Ukrainian citizens who enter and the Government has reached an agreement with Germany to receive 2,500 refugees who are currently in Moldovan territory.
