WHO urges destruction of dangerous pathogens in Ukraine

The World Health Organization (WHO) “strongly” urged Ukraine to get rid of possible “very dangerous pathogens” in its laboratories to avoid any risk of contagion among the populationdue to the war that affects a part of the country.

WHO “strongly recommended to the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and other responsible agencies that destroy very dangerous pathogens to prevent them from spreading by accident,” the UN agency said on Friday.

Aware of the concern that this recommendation -revealed by the agency Reuters– can create after threats to nuclear power plantsthe organization has placed it in the broader context of its long-standing cooperation with the Ukrainian authorities to improve security at these facilities.

The WHO, in its general recommendations on laboratory safety, “always insists on an approach based on risk assessment,” said Tarik Jasarevic, spokesman for the international institution that watches over world health, at a press conference in Geneva.

“Laboratories should always take into account the situation they are in and ensure that, in the event of a threat, there is a way to safely remove pathogens normally present in all countries for public health reasons and thus avoid an accidental escape”, Jasarevic specified.

questioned by the AFPthe WHO refused to offer a list of research centers in Ukraine nor did it indicate their level of security, nor the germs to which it refers.

Jasarevic also did not say whether a laboratory affected by these recommendations it was located in one of the areas being bombed and occupied by the Russian army. (I)
