Albares confirms that Spain will soon send more weapons to Ukraine although he asks for discretion with the details

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, confirmed this Friday that Spain will send more weapons to Ukraine in the coming daysalthough he has appealed for discretion on the type of weapons and where they will enter the country.

“The Minister of Defense has indicated that yes, that is going to be the case,” responded the Minister of Foreign Affairs in an interview on TVE, while recalling that the Twenty-seven also made the decision to help through the European Fund for Peace and bilaterally to the Ukrainian Army.

Of course, he has asked that “if we really” want to defend “independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and, above all, to protect these defenseless civilians” Ukrainians “the less we talk about weapons, what type and where it enters, the better”. Regarding the sanctions against Russia, Albares assured that “obviously” the European Union “will take all the necessary measures to achieve the economic collapse of Putin’s Russia.

“Yet there is room to further disconnect the Russian economy from the European and, therefore, also of the global economy”, assured the minister. Specifically, he mentioned sectors such as ports in which there is “margin to close the space to the Russian oligarchs and of course all energy matters”. In this sense, he has asserted that they talk “a lot” in the EU about how to relate to Russia on energy matters.

This yes, has urged to make decisions in the short term for “to prevent Putin’s war from affecting the electricity bill of households and companies highly dependent on gas”, but also in the medium and long term: “We cannot find ourselves in a situation like this again in any way”, he added.

Lastly, when asked whether the time has come to expand the defense budgetthe Minister of Foreign Affairs has indicated that all the countries of Europe are immense in the same reflection. “Europe has to equip itself with strategic autonomy and that means making decisions at a national and European level,” he pointed out, while slipping that this war has to lead us to reflect on what our level of Defense has to be.
