The Pakistani police notified this Thursday that they have arrested a man accused of killing his week-old daughteralleging that he preferred a boy.
The baby died after being shot five times in Mianwali city in central Punjab province on Sunday.
The father “she had been complaining for three or four days that she wanted to have a child and I was very angry,” he told the AFP Zarrar Khan, Mianwali Police spokesman.
The man, who had fled, was arrested during the early hours of Thursday after a intense searchaccording to the Punjab police.
The drama takes place a month after a pregnant woman showed up at a hospital with a nail inserted into the head by a healer that he had guaranteed her that she would thus give birth to a boy.
The woman had specified that she was the mother of three daughters and was expecting another girl.
In Pakistan, a deeply conservative and patriarchal country where girls and women face widespread violence, having a boy is often seen as a good omen, as he is believed to better secure his parents’ financial future than a girl. (I)
