Macron is “worried and pessimistic” about Russia’s war in Ukraine: “Europe must prepare for all possibilities”

If a week ago the forecasts for Emmanuel Macron on Russia’s war in the Ukraine were not very flattering, and he warned that “The worst is yet to come”, the French president’s prognosis for the conflict remains worrying. “I am worried and pessimistic. I do not see a ceasefire as realistic,” Macron has admitted, who during these weeks is leading the negotiations with Vladimir Putin himself for the cessation of the conflict.

The French president assures that It is difficult for there to be a diplomatic solution to the war in the short term and has clarified that the European Union must remain committed to offering a response that is up to the task. “I am worried and pessimistic. That is why I also believe that Europe must rise to the occasion. Europe is united against this war and that is very important. You must prepare yourself for all possibilities”, he maintained before the start in Versailles of the informal summit of heads of state and government, which ends tomorrow.

A union of the member countries that the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has also meant: “The EU Member States have never been so united, together with our transatlantic support”. “Putin believed that he was going to conquer Ukraine, he has failed. I thought it was going to divide us, it has failed. He believed that he was going to break the transatlantic relationship, he has failed. Now he has to stop the war,” defended the head of European diplomacy, also from Versailles.

However, Macron has confirmed that he will maintain dialogue with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, although being “honest” he does not believe that achieving a ceasefire “in the next few hours is a realistic scenario”. The French president and his Russian counterpart have held several talks since the outbreak of the war.
