EU calls Russian bombing of children’s hospital in Ukraine ‘heinous war crime’

The head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, described this Thursday as “heinous war crime” the bombing of a pediatric hospital in the Ukrainian city of Mariupolwhich left a balance of three dead and 17 wounded.

“The Russian bombing of a pediatric hospital is a heinous war crime,” Borrell said on Twitter, adding that the attacks on residential areas and the blockade of humanitarian aid convoys “must cease immediately.”

According to Borrell, Mariúpol “is under siege”.

The bombing that affected a pediatric hospital caused the death of a young girlin a case that shocked the world.

The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, pointed out for his part that the building served as a base for a Ukrainian nationalist battalion.

The building “had long been taken over by the Azov battalion and other radicals. All women in labour, sick and support staff had been withdrawn”, Lavrov said after contacts with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in Turkey.

Ukraine’s president, Volodimir Zelenski, had already described the attack as “a war crime.”

The head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, accused Russia on Thursday of probably committing “war crimes” for its attacks against “civil society” in Ukraine. (I)
