Chilean health authorities show concern about a new rise in COVID-19 cases

A sustained increase in coronavirus infections in recent weeks in Chile keeps the government on alert due to the decrease in the perception of risk among the population amid the massive and rapid vaccination campaign, health authorities said.

Among the causes of the new advance, the authorities pointed out the relaxation of the restrictions, which has allowed greater mobility and the breach of basic standards of care such as the use of a mask, hand washing, among others.

We are concerned about the situation, obviously”, Said the Minister of Health, Enrique Paris.

For its part, the undersecretary Paula Daza said that agents in charge of monitoring compliance with sanitary regulations have warned them that “The perception of risk in our country has been lost, that we are better but that people are not respecting sanitary measures ”.

Paris explained that the Santiago Metropolitan Region is the one that currently registers the highest incidence, with 76 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. They are followed by the northern and mining companies Antofagasta and Tarapacá.

On the other hand, the official stressed that in the country there are more than a million people lagging behind who have not come to receive the third dose, or booster, that the government launched to guarantee a good level of antibodies.

To promote its rapid vaccination campaign, the government established a “mobility pass”For people over 12 years of age that allows greater freedom for various activities.

Chile has vaccinated 13.6 of its 19 million inhabitants, while more than 5.5 million have already received the booster.

On the other hand, Paris pointed out that of the total of patients hospitalized in Intensive Care Units, 24% correspond to patients with COVID-19.
