The drama of Denis and many other Ukrainians: he helped his family flee the war and returned ready to fight for his country

After 14 days of war in Ukraine, many people have fled the conflict – more than two million – and waiting for the opportunity to be welcomed by other European countries after being left with nothing. Denis’s family is one of those hoping to get to Spain. They left Irpin for Romania: he himself left them at the border and then returned to Ukraine. He waits to be called up.

“It’s been 7 days since I left Irpin.” This is how Denis begins to tell us his story, similar to that of many Ukrainian men who, overnight, have been left alone. “I am now in a church. I live there and people I don’t know help me, “he tells laSexta exclusively. He has done so since the Russians besieged Irpin. There, Denis lived with his wife and his three small children.

Now he hopes that his family will be transferred to a better place: “They are waiting in Romania to go to Spain.” Specifically, to Madrid. Away from the bombs, from the tanks, from the alarms. Far from this horror that continues to livel: “Yes, of course I’m afraid,” he tells us in Spanish, a language he learned as a child and spent the summers in Valencia. But even so, and despite his disability, he says he is willing to fight for his country.
