The American chain Starbucks announced that it will suspend all its business in Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine, which will include the immediate closure of all coffee shops, hours after the also iconic MacDonald’s announced the same measure.
“We continue to monitor the tragic events and have today decided to suspend all business activity in Russia, including the shipment of all Starbucks products.”, said in a letter the CEO of the company, Kevin Johnson.
According to Johnson, all of the chain’s franchises in Russia have agreed “immediately suspend operations” and have pledged to support the nearly 2,000 workers who depend on starbucks.
The company, which reiterated its condemnation “to the horrific Russian attacks in Ukraine” advanced that, as the situation evolves, it will continue to take measures that are in line with its “values”.
Starbucks’ decision came shortly after another major US chain, McDonald’sannounced the temporary closure of its 850 stores in Russia and that puts its operations “pause” because they can not “ignore the unnecessary suffering caused to Ukraine”.
The two companies join a long list of companies that have opted for similar measures, while many others are coming under pressure to do so.
The soft drink giant PepsiCofor example, is exploring options with its important business in Russia in response to these calls, according to The Wall Street Journal.
