This Tuesday, the US congresswoman Norma Torres -representative for the state of California- led an initiative in which 19 other congressmen signed up to send a letter to the Ecuadorian president, Guillermo Lasso, asking him to approve the law on access to abortion for women and girls in cases of rape that was elaborated in the National Assembly.
“We write to congratulate the people of Ecuador for standing up for the safety and well-being of women and girls through important legislation recently passed by the National Assembly that allows access to abortion for rape survivors in Ecuador…Lo We respectfully urge (the president) to affirm the will of the Ecuadorian people expressed through the National Assembly and quickly sign this bill,” the text indicates.
Additionally, they asked him to sign the law without changes, since President Lasso had previously said that he could veto it because “it respects life from conception,” although this Tuesday he indicated that his final pronouncement on the law would be made next week.
The letter from the US congressmen has the support of the international organizations Human Rights Watch and the Challenge Foundation.
“Ecuador has taken an important step to protect the rights of women and girls victims of sexual violence through a democratic process that included a ruling by the Constitutional Court that decriminalizes abortion in cases of rape, a bill proposed by the Office of the Ombudsman that regulates it and an open debate by the legislature before its adoption,” said Tamara Taraciuk Broner, interim director for the Americas at Human Rights Watch.
In addition to Torres, among the signatories of the letter are: Albio Sires, Jim McGovern, Jackie Speier, Veronica Escobar, Sylvia García, Barbara Lee, Joaquín Castro, Carolyn Maloney, Jimmy Gomez, Eleanor Holmes Norton, Yvette Clarke, Dina Titus, Marilyn Strickland , Judy Chu, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, David Trone, Julia Brownley, Lois Frankel, and Jim Costa.
On other occasions, Torres has already spoken out and promoted similar actions on women’s rights issues, especially in Central and South America. (I)
