War is terrible. In the midst of the conflict in Russia and Ukraine, children are the greatest heroes, for their ability to look at life with eyes of innocence and to perform truly heroic acts.
Such is the case of the 11-year-old boy who crossed the Ukraine-Slovakia border alone. His belongings in a plastic bag and in his hand the passport and a phone number written on the palm.
According to a note published in the ABC newspaper, the mother put the little boy on a train to Slovakia, since she could not travel with him, since she had to stay home to take care of her mother, the child’s grandmother, who suffers from a disability.

The story of the boy who crossed the Ukrainian border alone
The Slovakian police revealed that the Ukrainian boy crossed the border alone; with a plastic bag, his passport and a phone number written in his hand. This is reported by the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo on its website.
On the way, the boy found a group of volunteers, who helped him and gave him food, said Slovakian police spokeswoman Denisa Bardyova, adding that the boy arrived on Saturday, March 5.
“They gave him food and drink, he came only from Zaporizhia because his parents had to stay in Ukraine,” Bardyova said.

The child’s mother is a widow
For her part, Yulia Pisetskaya, the child’s mother, thanked the group of volunteers and the police. “I am very grateful that they saved my son’s life,” she said in a video posted on the Slovak Interior Ministry’s Facebook account. She added that in Ukraine there are people with good hearts. “In your small country there are people with a big heart.”
She added: “I am a widow and I have more children. I want to thank the Slovak customs and volunteers who took care of my son and helped him cross the border. I am grateful that you saved my son’s life. Next to my city there is a nuclear power plant that the Russians are shooting at. I couldn’t leave my mother, she can’t move on her own.”
The Slovak Interior Ministry said on Facebook that the boy “won everyone’s hearts with his smile, bravery and determination, worthy of a true hero.” They said authorities had “kept him warm and provided him with food and drink.”
