The far right leader Matteo Salviniknown for being a staunch supporter of anti-immigration policies in Italy, has surprised many by move to polandon the border with Ukraine, to support refugees fleeing the Russian invasion.
His objective, as he had conveyed to the media, was to “bring dozens and dozens of children, sick people, widows and orphans to Italy”, for which he would have contacted different NGOs that these days are collaborating with the ukrainian people.
But his visit was cut short when in the Polish city of Przemysl he ran into its mayor, Wojciech Bakun, who wanted remind the Italian of his devotion to Vladimir Putin. During an appearance to the media by Salvini, the Pole showed the camera the Putin support t-shirt with which the far-right posed a few years ago on the Red Square in Moscow.
“I’m not going to receive you, come with me to the border to condemn Putin,” Bakun snapped, addressing him in English, to make it clear that the visit was not to his liking: “no respect for you“(I have no respect for you). Also, he has asked the Italian senator to wear it during a visit to the refugees.
After this, cries have been heard from many of those present, including photojournalists, who they insult and call the leader of the League a “clown” and thus show their discontent with the visit.
The networks have not hesitated to compare his two faces: that of a supporter of the Russian president wearing a shirt with his face, and the one that he has presented these days, asking for peace in Ukraine.
The incoherent attitude of the former Italian Minister of the Interior is not limited to this clash with the Polish mayor. And it is that the extreme right is being judged in Italy for its anti-immigration and “closed ports” policies. Specifically, he is accused of kidnapping of peoplefor having about a hundred migrants prevented from disembarking for 19 days rescued in the central Mediterranean by the ship of the Spanish NGO Open Arms.
