The president of China calls the situation in Ukraine “worrying” and urges dialogue

Xi has also assured that Beijing is “deeply distressed” by the outbreak of another war on the European continent.

The Chinese presidentXi Jinping, on Tuesday described the situation in Ukraine as “worrying”, more than ten days after the conflict broke out in the European country, and has urged the dialogue between the parties.

This was done in a video call with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and the French president, Emmanuel Macron, within the framework of efforts to advance diplomatically to end the conflict. During the conversation, Xi also assured that Beijing is “deeply grieved” by the outbreak of another war on the European continent.

For this reason, according to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua, it has urged support for the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine and has emphasized the need to encourage the two parties “to maintain the momentum of the negotiations, overcome difficulties, continue the dialogue and achieve peaceful results”.

Scholz has detailed through his account on the social network Twitter that Xi has transferred to him and Macron that China supports “all diplomatic efforts” to resolve the conflict. In addition, he has demanded the creation of humanitarian corridors in combat zones.

According to a statement released by the Elysee, Xi has recalled the importance of the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity and has supported the efforts of France and Germany to achieve a Stop the fire and the need to guarantee the population’s access to humanitarian aid provided by the United Nations. In this sense, Macron and Scholz discussed with the Chinese president the ongoing efforts to resolve the situation, including the role of sanctions.

Macron and Scholz have underlined the “dramatic consequences” of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, in particular the growing number of civilian casualties and of refugees.
