Bulgaria asks for an exception in imposing sanctions on Russia. “We have no alternative, we are too dependent”

The war in Ukraine unleashed by Putin has been going on for the 13th day now. Subsequent sanctions imposed on the local economy, which is in an unprecedented crisis, have a strong impact. Nevertheless, Vadimir Putin does not withdraw his troops from Ukraine, on the contrary – Russian troops are becoming more and more brutal, they attack and kill civilians. That is why the European Union has announced the imposition of further sanctions. The issue of banning the import of raw materials from Russia is under discussion.

Bulgaria will not sign up to further sanctions

From the very beginning, Germany was opposed to such a solution. Bulgaria joined on Monday, fearing that such a ban would have a very negative impact on their economy.

– Bulgaria would support all kinds of measures as we are against war, but for these two issues (oil and gas), perhaps we would ask for an exception. At the moment we have no alternative, we are too dependent – said Kiril Petkov

Bulgaria is “almost completely dependent on gas supplies from Russia’s Gazprom, and the country’s only refinery, owned by Russia’s Lukoil, supplies more than 60% of the fuel used in Bulgaria.”

Bulgaria Will Find Another Way To Obtain Raw Materials?

Bulgaria has started work on the diversification of natural gas supplies and is in talks on the import of larger quantities of Azerbaijani gas, while at the same time considering the possibility of delivering liquefied natural gas through Greek ports, but all these solutions need time.

Prime Minister Petkov is clearly on the side of Ukraine, even though he will not support the ban on gas and oil imports. Bulgaria sent humanitarian aid to Ukraine and announced that it would be able to accept war refugees.

– We fully support the Ukrainian people, we have supported the first package of sanctions, we are even open to other sanctions, but these two sanctions would be very difficult for us to accept – for the economy and the country – says the Prime Minister.

The Reuters Agency has unofficially reported that they are willing to ban Russian oil from being imported to the US without the participation of European allies.
