The German Prosecutor General’s Office has opened an investigation into possible Russian war crimes in Ukraine, Justice Minister Marco Buschmann confirmed in statements to the newspaper “Passauer Neue Presse”.
Buschmann said that it is a “structural summary” in which, without specific defendants, they begin to collect evidence that can later be used in proceedings against certain defendants.
The German public prosecutor’s office is empowered to investigate crimes against humanity, even if they occur outside of Germany.
Thus, for example, in Frankfurt, a Syrian doctor is answering in court accused of having participated in torture in his country.
The former Minister of Justice, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, and the former Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Baum, had already filed a complaint with the General Prosecutor’s Office against Vladimir Putin for war crimes.
Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger justified the complaint by saying that it was important to start collecting evidence for possible future trials. (I)
