China Says Mixing Taiwan, Ukraine Issues Is Using ‘Double Standards’

The Taiwan and Ukraine issues are different as Taiwan has always been a part of China, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, saying that trying to equate the situations is acting with “double standards.”

China claims the democratically governed island as its own territory and has increased military pressure against Taiwan in the past two years, never relinquishing the use of force to bring it under Beijing’s control.

The Chinese and Taiwanese governments agree that the situations in Taiwan and Ukraine are different, although for different reasons.

China says Taiwan has never been an independent country, while the island says it is geopolitically important and, unlike Ukraine and Russia, does not share any land borders with China.

Yi said that the Taiwan and Ukraine issues are “not at all comparable” as the situation in Taiwan is China’s internal affair and the situation in Ukraine is a dispute between two countries.

“We have seen that some people emphasize the principle of sovereignty in the Ukraine issue. However, they continue to undermine China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on the Taiwan issue. This is double standards,” she maintained in apparent reference to the United States.

Washington is Taiwan’s main international sponsor and arms supplier, a frequent source of friction in US-China ties.

Beijing does not recognize any claim to sovereignty by the Taiwanese government, which in turn claims that the People’s Republic of China has never ruled the island and that only the Taiwanese people can choose their future.
