The American aircraft manufacturer Boeing announced that it has suspended its purchases of titanium from Russia, where its main supplier, VSMPO-AVISMA, is installed, and assured that it has sufficient stock and other sources to obtain the product used in the construction of aircraft.
The group did not provide information on the status of the company it maintains with VSMPO-Avisma, Ural Boeing Manufacturing (UBM), created in 2006.
Boeing and VSMPO-Avisma signed an agreement last November confirming that the Russia-based group would remain “the largest supplier of titanium for current and future Boeing commercial aircraft”. The first contract between the two firms dates back to 1997.
But the American group distanced itself from Russia after the invasion of Ukraine, announcing last week that it was suspending the delivery of parts, its services of “maintenance and technical support for Russian airlines”, as well as their “major operations” in Moscow.
The chairman of the VSMPO-Avisma board is Sergey Chemezov, who is on the list of Russian nationals sanctioned by the United States.
Boeing assures that it has “a substantial titanium stock” from the diversification of its “world sources” supply.
“We are really sad that the contract with our long-standing partner (Boeing) has been suspended.”, declared to the Russian agency TASS the president of VSMPO-Avisma, Dmitri Osipov, who indicated that the firm expected “this situation” and will redirect its sales towards other markets and sectors.
