Romania doubles production of potassium iodide due to fear of nuclear accident

The Romanian Health Minister, Alexandru Rafila, announced on Monday that the Romanian company Compañía Antibióticos Iasi (CAI) will increase its production of potassium iodide in 2.5 million tablets every 48 hours.

“Starting tomorrow, the CAI will manufacture large quantities at a rate of 2.5 million pills every two days,” declared the minister. The announcement comes after fears over the attack by the Russian military on Europe’s largest nuclear power plant. as the demand for this substance skyrocketed throughout the continent.

The Potassium iodide is a non-radioactive iodine salt that can help prevent the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine, thereby protecting the thyroid from radiation damage. The thyroid is the part of the body that is most sensitive to radioactive iodine.
