The Russian army killed the mayor of Gostomel, a city northwest of the Ukrainian capital where a strategic airport is located, the municipality of this town reported on Monday.
“The mayor of the city of Gostomel, Yuri Illich Prylypko, died while distributing bread and medicine to the sick,” the municipality said in a statement on its official Facebook page.
“No one forced him to face enemy bullets. He would have been able, like hundreds of others, to hide in a basement (…) But he had made his decision ”, he added. “He died for his community, for Gostomel, he died as a hero.”
In the town of Gostomelnorthwest of Kiev, is the military airport of Antonovwhich had been attacked by Russian forces on February 25, the day after the start of the invasion of Ukraine.
