Putin assures Macron that he will not give up the war to achieve his goals

Vladimir Putin is not going to give up his goals. It is the conclusion of phone meeting of two hours held by the French president, Emmanuel Macronwith its Russian counterpart.

The conditions that Russia demands from Ukraine are demilitarization, that they renounce NATO, and that they hand over Crimea and Donbas. Only in that case would they stop what they call “special operation”, since they never refer to war as “war” or “invasion”.

During the talk, the French president has called for a ceasefire and protection of civilianswhile expressing concern to Putin about the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine Given the recent information about attacks on power plants and research reactors.

For Macron it is “a crucial issue” in reference to the March 4 bombing of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plantto which Putin has replied that “is willing to respect the standards of the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) for the protection of plants”, as reported by the French Presidency.

On the other hand, Putin “has denied” to the French president “that his army is attacking civilians” and has assured that “it is not his intention” to attack the nuclear power plants. The Russian has further warned that he would achieve his goals “either through negotiation or through war.”

Although Macron has been one of the world’s most active diplomatic leaders, he has not been the only one who has tried to negotiate with the Kremlin. To his meeting, those of the prime minister of Israel or the Turkish president are added in the last hours. For the time being, the Ukrainian foreign minister accepts the latter’s offer to negotiate in Turkey with his Russian counterpart.
