The Russian ambassador to Bulgaria, Eleonora Mitrofanova, apologized this Sunday for having referred to NATO countries as “urinals” in a message published on February 28 on social networks and which provoked an official protest from the Government of Bulgaria, a member of that Alliance.
The Executive reported today that the request for apologies occurred during a meeting with the prime minister, Kiril Petkov, of the diplomat, in which she promised to “maintain a constructive tone from this moment on”.
On the 28th, the Russian Embassy denounced on its Facebook account that some web pages of Russian state institutions were not working due to “the informative aggression of Washington and its Euro-Atlantic urinals” (in reference to the other NATO members) against Russia.
Two days later, Bulgaria lodged a formal protest against these “cynical and offensive” comments and, at the same time, declared two Russian diplomats “persona non grata” because they were carrying out espionage tasks and gave them 48 hours to leave the Balkan country. Member of the European Union (EU) and NATO.
Mitrofanova then refused to go to the Foreign Ministry to accept the protest notes, sending a lesser representative.
The Bulgarian government, which has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has demanded that Moscow not interfere in Bulgaria’s internal politics.
Petkov yesterday expressed by telephone to the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenskiy, his admiration for his leadership and courage in the face of the Russian attack.
In addition, he assured him that Bulgaria will attend to the refugees fleeing the war, of whom 25,000 have already arrived.
