Conmebol warns FIFA: it will not participate in the biennial World Cup

Despite the seduction tour of FIFA president Gianni Infantino in South America in favor of a World Cup every two years, Conmebol ratified its rejection of the initiative.

The statement came after a meeting of Conmebol’s council on Wednesday at its headquarters in Luque, Paraguay.

Infantino argues that organizing a men’s or women’s World Cup every year is important to attract new generations, give other countries more opportunities to qualify, and generate more resources to narrow the gap against the supremacy of Europe and South America.

However, his proposal collides with the resistance of UEFA and the Conmebol, which warn about the physical wear of the players and the damage to the calendar of domestic and continental competitions with national teams and clubs.

The FIFA president tried in vain to seduce Conmebol’s member associations during a tour of several South American countries in mid-October.
