Russia announces a temporary ceasefire for the opening of two humanitarian corridors

“Today, March 5, a ceasefire is announced starting at 10:00 Moscow time and the opening of humanitarian corridors for the departure of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha,” the Defense Ministry said.

Russia today announced a temporary ceasefire from 10:00 Moscow time (07:00 GMT) for the opening of humanitarian corridors that allow the evacuation of the civilian population in the cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha, in eastern Ukraine. “Today, March 5, a ceasefire is announced starting at 10:00 Moscow time and the opening of humanitarian corridors for the departure of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha,” the Defense Ministry said.

According to Russian agencies, the humanitarian corridors and evacuation routes have been agreed with Ukraine, although the latter country has not yet officially confirmed this information. “There have been no official reports about this in Ukraine yet,” Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, said on his Telegram account.

However, the Mariupol City Council has indicated in its Telegram account minutes after the Russian announcement that “the moment of the opening of the humanitarian corridor and the beginning of the regime of silence for the city is currently underway”.

Mariupol is located on the shores of the Sea of Azov and is completely blocked by Russian forces. Volnovakha is located about 65 kilometers north of Mariupol.

Russia and Ukraine agreed to open humanitarian corridors in the second round of negotiations that their respective delegations held on Thursday in Belarusian territory and declare a temporary ceasefire in those places to allow it.

“While we solve humanitarian problems and seek all possible ways to get Mariupol out of the blockade, our respected Armed Forces of Ukraine, National Guard, Azov Regiment, Marines, Border Guards, Sea Guards, Police and rescuers stand as a reliable shield on the outskirts of the city,” the mayor of Mariupol wrote on his Telegram account.

Likewise, the mayor has said that the city was on the verge of a “humanitarian catastrophe”, since Mariúpol was left without electricity, water and heating due to the constant bombing of the Russian Army.
