Ukraine wants to establish nine humanitarian corridors, the UN is ready to support their creation

The UN said Friday that it is ready to support the launch of humanitarian corridors in Ukraine after the principle of agreement reached between Kiev and Moscow to try to facilitate the evacuation of civilians from areas affected by the fighting.

Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said that The United Nations and humanitarian organizations are “ready to work with the parties” in that sense and urged both sides to guarantee the safe passage of civilians seeking to flee the violence.

Dujarric confirmed that the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, spoke today with the Russian Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigú, to discuss cooperation mechanisms “to ensure the safe evacuation of civilians” and to “provide humanitarian aid to all who need it.”

The Russian Ministry, for its part, said that Shoigu assured Guterres that his troops have already created humanitarian corridors in the areas under his control, through which they have evacuated almost 150,000 people.

Ukraine asks for 9 runners

The possible opening of humanitarian corridors was the main result of the negotiations held on Thursday between Russian and Ukrainian representatives, which the Kiev government wants to establish in nine places: Sumyin the northeast, Cherniov (northeast), Kharkiv (East), Kyiv (North), Mykolayiv (south), Zaporizhia (southeast), Kherson (south) and the regions of Lugansk and Donetsk (East).

The UN, meanwhile, said that it continues to improve its infrastructure to reinforce the delivery of humanitarian aid, after having been able to transfer part of its personnel from Kiev to the west of the country, in coordination with both Russia and Ukraine to guarantee their security.

According to Dujarric, the organization is in close contact with the Ukrainian authorities and is likely to send an official to the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow to ensure coordination and protect humanitarian workers on the ground. (I)
