Nicole travels alone and without a passport: the journey of a 12-year-old girl from Ukraine to Gijón fleeing the war

nicole is 12 years old and is crossing Europe to flee the war in Ukraine. He has left his native country and is heading to Gijonwhere she has been spending her summers for six years and her foster family is desperate to have her under their roof.

When the bombing started last week her mother wanted to make her safe from the war and that’s where Paula, her foster mother, comes in. It is she who has taken care of the girl every summer for six and, in the midst of a war outbreak, who wants to get her out of the country.

From Kiev, the girl has managed to reach Moldova and the idea was that she would go to Gijón from there. But the trip is proving to be an odyssey since the driver who was supposed to take her to the plane in the direction of Gijón backed away from her and Nicole was left alone. Without her family, with strangers and in a foreign country.

Paula says that she crossed the border with some families that her mother had contacted. And, since then, she has been fostered by a family in moldovawhere it will remain until they manage to bring it to Spain safely.

But documentation is still missing and her passport remained in Kiev and she asks the Embassy to allow her to leave and enter the country. Paula is moved to read the last message from Nicole’s mother: “If something happens to me, please take care of Nicole.”

If nothing works, Paula is ready to go looking for her in Moldova.
