UN Security Council emergency meeting on Ukraine

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting this Friday at 11:30 a.m. (4:30 p.m. GMT), at the request of Britain, to examine the consequences of the Russian attack on Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant, diplomatic sources said. .

The public session, also requested by the United States, France, Norway, Ireland and Albania, was convened at the request of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, diplomats told the AFP.

Earlier in the morning there was no indication that any text could be adopted at the meeting. Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council, has the right to veto all non-procedural decisions.

Hours earlier, US President Joe Biden had urged Russia to “cease military activities in the area” of the nuclear power plant.

Located in southern Ukraine, Zaporizhia is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and was hit by Russian artillery fire, according to the Ukrainians. Facilities attached to the plant were affected by a fire, further increasing the concern of Westerners in the face of the Russian offensive in Ukraine.

On Friday, the Russian armed forces took control of the nuclear power plant. The Ukrainian operator of the same later specified that the fire – which had affected a laboratory and a room intended for training – had been extinguished and that no radioactive escape had been recorded. (I)
